- summary
People suffering from autism and their parents are the most vulnerable
group of the Slovak population. We can prove it from the experience of
our own with the autistic children. Due to their handicap they cannot
participate in the full upbringing, education process and social allocation.
There is no causal therapy for this kind of handicap since it is caused
by a combination of several types of genetic disorders. Since there is
no community home facility in Slovakia where the autistic children would
receive a complete adequate therapeutic and educational care the parents
of such children are reliant to their permanent care. It results in severe
family difficulties, problems to create conditions for their hobbies,
difficult handling of extreme behavior disorders of autistic children
damaging themselves and their surrounding. Because of their helplessness
and despair they often destroy their surrounding. Parents of children
with such disorder are completely eliminated from their social and work
life. With the help of the Society Supporting Autistic Persons and Andreas
Autistic Center many actions have been taken to allocate such children-pupils
to special schools. Unfortunately, schools are unable to provide adequate
conditions for autistic pupils, especially for those with a heavier handicap,
and they do not have room to develop respective therapeutic and educational
environment. This is given by the currently applicable standards of the
school environment and legislation. At the point of completed obligatory
school attendance such children are excluded from schools and the problem
must be again faced by their parents even to a greater extent. Parents/mothers
desperate physically and mentally start looking for "placing"
their child to "some home". It also happens that mother's health
is strongly suffering from such situation, which can be proved by several
case studies. There are no conditions for systematic assistance to autistic
children in a community home facility developed in Slovakia. This problem
becomes even more serious in the teenage age when the health conditions
of such handicapped children progress considerably very often.
The basic
requirement and our motto of the Drahuskovo project under preparation
is:"We do not take care of our clients we live with them."
The most necessary requirement is to create the conditions for a meaningful
job for all of us. The client may not and will not perform any work,
which is not meaningful and which would be unusable in practical terms.
The objective is not to create unusable academic skills but to live
a common life of staff and clients supporting each other and enabling
them a good-quality life with the meaningful work and adequate rest
and relax as it results from the professional knowledge of autism supported
by practical experience.
The future clients of Drahuskovo will be:
a) Persons suffering from autism and similar disorders (handicapped
people) for whom we create the conditions for their self-fulfillment,
working, social self-realization. The handicapped client will determine
his/her requirements and wishes and the Drahuskovo's staff will try
to create such conditions for his/her human and professional development.
b) Children from the Children's Homes (CHH) - we will create the conditions
for "Domov na polceste/Home in the midway" to operate. The
Children's Home leavers get a chance to have a permanent living, meaningful
work, re-education. Thus they get the opportunity to develop their personality
in a family environment of Drahuskovo, receive a further education (bachelor
and master part-time study, which will be supported by Drahuskovo),
develop their special social and working habits, get a chance to save
money.
We will
support a comprehensive development of our clients keeping the principles
of gender equality. I also assume a strong support of the Romany ethnic
group (80% of the CHH's clients are Romany children). Thus we can create
a room for positive and meaningful involvement of such clients to the
social life. The project of Drahuškovo defines a whole-life cycle of
assistance to the clients. From early childhood till old age. One of
the basic determining factors is a solidarity principle - necessity
to take care of own client at any conditions and in any age.
